While Ed Kirby (The Aquidneck Club) may have emerged as the champion at the 104th NEPGA Section Championship at Tedesco CC Sept. 5, the real winners were the two North Shore golf courses that hosted the event – Tedesco and Ferncroft CC. Not a single player managed to finish under par in the tournament.
At co-host Ferncroft CC, the field averaged an astounding score of 81.81, more than nine strokes over par, over the first 36 holes of the event. Players fared a bit better at Tedesco, averaging a little more than 6-over par, 76. Kirby was one of two players to post sub-par rounds on the final day, a 2-under 68 at Tedesco to finish with a 54-hole total 1-over 213.
Seul-Ki Hawley (Winchester CC) capturing her second-straight title in the NEPGA Women’s Championship and finished tied for sixth in the Section Championship, punching her ticket to the PGA Professional Championship at PGA GC in Port St. Lucie, Florida next April.
Greg Kelly (Myopia HC), who entered the final round tied for the lead, finished tied for fifth with a 218 and also qualified for the PGA Professional Championship, joining Vesper’s Rich Berberian (5th, 216), who is exempt, and Joe Rocha (Golf Country), who finished 11th with a 220. Bass Rocks’ Todd Scarafoni (T19, 223) secured alternate status.
