Salem CC is gearing up to host its third Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship. The event, the 64th, which was last held at Salem 15 years ago, will take place Sept. 22-23.
At the Bradford CC qualifier on Aug. 29, Rob Carpenter (Andover CC) and Ray Garrahan (Winchester) qualified with 5-over 76. James Staffieri (Salem CC) and Michael Zmetrovich (Tedesco CC) qualified with 77s and Ciaran Hynes (Kernwood CC) made the cut on the number (78). Domenic Veneziano (Salem CC) shot 79 and was an alternate.
At Gannon Municipal GC Aug. 8, 11 qualifiers punched their ticket to the championship proper. Gannon’s Jay Fiste leveraged his local knowledge to post a 5-over 75 to tie for fourth with Peter Ellison (The Meadow at Peabody). Jeff McCowan (Beverly G&T) and Jonathan Nekoroski (Salem CC) shot 76 to finish in a four-way tie for eighth. Paul Sweeney (Bass Rocks GC) and Christopher Mellen (Salem CC) secured alternate spots with 77s. Tedesco CC’s Cy Kilgore (79) and Wenham CC’s Jim Scanlon (80) and Pat Scanlon (80) just missed the cut.
At the Aug. 21 qualifier at Swansea CC, Haverhill CC’s Mark Souliotis shot a 2-over 74 to finish T-4 and become one of 14 players who qualified.
At the Twin Hills CC qualifier Aug. 6, Robert Schmeck (Beverly G&T) tied for third with a 1-over 72. Bear Hill CC’s Jeff Fisher (73) and Bear Hill CC’s Kevin MacIntyre (74) also qualified.
Two-time Massachusetts Amateur (2004, 2005) and Senior Amateur (2018, 2022) champion Frank Vana Jr. of Boxford will also be in the field via an exemption. He was runner-up in 2023 and was last year’s Mass Golf Player of the Year.

The 11th Massachusetts Super Senior Amateur will be held at Oak Hill CC in Fitchburg Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Cy Kilgore (Tedesco CC) was one of 10 to qualify at Brockton CC Aug. 13 for the championship. He shot a 5-over 77 to tie for fifth. At the Wedgewood Pines CC qualifier Aug. 21, Bob Magnuson (Ferncroft CC) posted the second best score with a 6-over 76. Len Ladd (Bradford CC, 78), Douglas Parigian (Long Meadow CC, 79), Steve Cameron (Thomson CC, 81), Wayne Burgess (Long Meadow, 85) and James Grant (Bradford CC, 85) also qualified. Charles Costello (Ferncroft CC, 86) and Robert Wight (Salem CC, 86) earned alternate status.

Pam Kuong (Charles River CC) won her fourth Massachusetts Women’s Senior Amateur Championship Aug. 20-21 with a 5-over 149 at Crestwood CC. Danielle Lee (Renaissance CC) tied for sixth with 159. Stacey Freda (Andover CC) shot 162 and placed eighth. Jenny Ceppi (Salem CC) shot 167 and tied for 13th. Barb Hecimovich (Beverly G&T) finished 19th with a 170, while Kym Pappathanasi (Renaissance) was right behind in 20th place with a 172.
Other locals who finished in the top-40 included Irene Haley (Ferncroft CC) T23, 176), Marcia Veale (Wenham CC, 27th, 177), Connie Hayden (Sagamore Spring GC, T31, 181) and Diane Carter (Salem CC, T35, 186).
Rockport CC’s Dani Dragonas finished second in the Legends category with a two-day score of 204.

The Massachusetts Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship was held at Bayberry Hills CC and Bass River GC Aug. 5-8. Abby Zhu (Indian Ridge CC) finished third in the qualifying rounds with a 1-under 71 at Bayberry Hills and 2-under 70 at Bass River. She fell in the first round of match play, losing to Emma Abramson on the 18th hole, 1 down. Charlotte Rollins (Bradford CC) finished second in the Junior-Mite Division with a 1-over par 75.

At the Mass Golf Father Daughter Modified Scotch event Aug. 1 at the Crumpin-Fox Club, the team of Todd and Niamh O’Brien (Winchester CC) was the North Shore’s top finisher with a 14-over 86 to finish 22nd. William and Wendy Colby (Ould Newbury GC) and Alan and Rebekah Scharfe (Essex CC) tied for 29th with 99s.
Dustin (Wenham CC) and Charlotte Rollins (Bradford CC) won the Forward Division with a 6-over 78. Patrick and Katherine Mahoney (Wenham CC) finished fourth with an 89 and Meli and Courtney Dignan finished sixth with a 91. David (Meadow Brook GC) and Abigail Mitchell (Youth on Course, Mass Golf) shot 95 and finished 10th, while David (Bass Rocks GC) and Sara Sudbay (Granite Links GC) were one shot back in 11th.

The Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship was held July 30-31 at The Ledges GC. Joseph Lenane (George Wright GC) ran away with the title, winning by 11 shots with a 13-under 131. Sean Winchell (Gannon Municipal GC) was the top North Shore player with a 9-over 153 to finish tied for 33rd. John Breslin (Unicorn GC) and Michael Papamechail (Beverly G&T) shot 155 and tied for 45th, while George DeRoche (Sagamore Spring GC) and Bud Copeland (The Meadow at Peabody) were one shot back in a tie for 48th.

Mass Golf’s Father-Son Modified Scotch championship was held at Blackstone National on July 29-30. Tom (USGA/Mass Golf GC) and Ethan Doyle (Olde Salem Greens) shot 2-over 74 and tied for ninth in the Senior Division. Len (Bradford GC) and Derek Ladd (LeBaron Hills CC) shot 76 and tied for 21st. James and Bill Drohen (Bradford CC) tied for 30th with a 78 and Sean (Trull Brook GC) and Sean Connolly (Mount Hood GC) tied for 40th with a 79. Dan and Nathan Sweeney (Bass Rocks) tied for 44th with an 81 and Dan and Jason Rubin (Kernwood CC) shot 87 and tied for 57th.

At the 57th annual Ouimet Memorial Tournament at Indian Pond GC and Woodland CC, Kevin Daly (Salem CC) finished 11th in the Lowery Senior Division with a 9-over 224. Ken Whalley (Ferncroft CC) shot 160 and missed the cut.
In the Championship Division, Owen Egan (Winchester CC) finished tied for sixth with a 3-under 212. Aiden Emmerich (Kernwood CC) tied for 17th with a 216. Brother Christian Emmerich (Kernwood CC) was one shot back tied for 19th.

The New England Amateur Championship was held July 16-18 at Laconia CC in New Hampshire. CJ Winchenbaugh (Oyster Harbors Club) won the title with an 11-under 205 after birdieing the first playoff hole. Evan Buddenhagen (Essex County Club) tied for eighth with a 212. At the New England Women’s Amateur Championship June 25-27 at the Samoset Resort in Maine, youth ruled. Junior Carys Fennessey (Cocheco CC) shot 3-over 216 and won in a sudden-death playoff. Sisters Amanda Adams and Victoria Adams (Winchester CC) shot 239 and 248 to finish tied for 14th and tied for 24th, respectively. Kym Pappathanasi (Tedesco CC) tied for 12th in the Senior Division with a 252. Barb Hecimovich (Beverly G&TC) shot 254 and placed 14th. Irene Haley (Ferncroft CC) finished 16th with a 257. Diane Carter (Salem) and Donna Dileso (The Meadow at Peabody) missed the 36-hole cut.

The popular NEPGA Jr. Tour made a couple of pit stops at Gannon Municipal GC this summer. On July 30, Lynn’s Shea Newhall scorched the Wayne Stiles designed course with a 1-under 69 to win the Boys 16-18 title. Jack Oreal (Newburyport) finished third with a 74 and Lucas Carbone (Beverly) finished fifth with a 77. Luke DiLisio (Lynn) and Sam Ewald (Reading) shot 82 and tied for sixth and Jake Morris (Wakefield) finished 10th with an 87.
William Kennedy (Melrose) shared the top honors in the Boys 14-15 division with a 76. Joseph Tavilla (Peabody) shot 78 and placed third. Jake Martin (Danvers) and Tyler Forbes (Marblehead) rounded out the top-5 with 79s. Ben Mucci (Winchester) shot 82 and finished eighth.
In the Boys 12-13 division, Leo Su (Ipswich) and Joseph Sanchez (Salem) tied for the runner-up spot with 83s with James Maloney (Wakefield) placing fifth with an 86 and Jackson O’Hare (Danvers) placing seventh with an 88. Thomas LeBlanc (Saugus) placed second in the Boys 11 & under division with a 36. Jackson Danahy (Swampscott) shot 48 and was fourth.
On July 15, Gannon’s layout proved to be the winner with not a single player posting red numbers. Louie Spychalski (Danvers) and Jack Sweeney (Stoneham) shot matching 4-over 74s to tie for second in the Boys 16-18 division. Shea Newhall (Lynn) and Micah Hasikawa (Swampscott) were one shot back tied for fourth. Jack Burnham (Melrose) was sixth with a 77 and Jack Oreal (Newburyport) was seventh with a 79. Grady O’Gannon (Swampscott) and Alex Tracy (Wakefield) shot 82 and tied for eighth. Ryan McCarthy (Wakefield) shot 83 and placed 10th, Cameron McIntosh (Wenham) shot 88 and placed 12th and Luke DiLisio (Lynn) was one shot back in 13th.

Kernwood CC hosted its club championship (the Peter S. Oppenheim Club Championship) on Aug. 2-4. Salem State senior Danny Dilisio defeated Josh Price on the third playoff hole, after the two had tied at 13-over after three rounds of stroke play. Twenty four players competed, with 12 being cut after two rounds with a cut line at 20-over. Former champions in the field included Stuart Robbin, Scott Sagan and Rick Cohen. Dilisio played the final round with his uncle, David Bossman, who finished in a tie for 3rd. … On Aug. 15, Kernwood held its annual scholarship dinner during which summer associates were presented with college scholarship awards. Kernwood started this tradition during its 75th anniversary year, in 1989. Presenting the awards this year were Scott Sagan and Steve Solomon, who is club president. The 23 recipients were employed at Kernwood during their summer breaks in many capacities at the club, including Golf Operations, Food and Beverage, Greens and Lifeguarding. … Joe Rocha, teaching pro at Golf Country in Middleton, finished first in the NEPGA event held at York Golf & Tennis Club in York, Maine, Aug. 5. Rocha shot a 1-under 69.
