Mass Golf’s Women’s Senior Amateur Championship was held at Hatherly CC Aug. 29–30. In division 1, Danielle Lee (Renaissance) and Jenny Ceppi (Bass Rocks) tied for seventh with a 36-hole score of 164, 13 shots behind winner Sue Curtin (Boston Golf Club). Kym Pappathanasi (Renaissance) shot 168 and tied for 16th, while Marcia Veale (Wenham) shot 171 and tied for 18th and Kim Grady (Haverhill) shot 172 and tied for 22nd. In the Legends division, Donna Dileso (Sagamore) shot 180 and was runner-up, 10 shots behind winner Mary Gale (Bedrock). Dani Dragonas (Rockport) finished fifth.
Vesper’s Chris Herrick and his partner Thomas Hackett shot 9-under 63 at Bayberry Hills on the Cape Aug. 29 to snag medalist honors in a qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship that will take place May 25-29, 2024 at Philadelphia Cricket Club. Christian Jensen (Wakefield) and Michael Roulic shot 65 and are alternates.
Alec Hurd (Bass Rocks) qualified for his first Mid-Amateur Championship Aug. 22 at Franklin CC. Hurd shot 3-over 74 to qualify for the championship, which is scheduled to be played Sept. 19–20 at Willowbend CC. Jeffrey Weishaar (Renaissance) and Alex Morsey (Tedesco) shot 76 and are alternates. Brett Krekorian (Indian Ridge) also punched his ticket for the first time did it in style with a 2-under 69 to claim co-medalist honors at Waubeeka Golf Links on Aug. 23. Rick Moreau (Vesper) qualified with a 72.
Fresh off the heels of winning the Mass Amateur at Essex, Ryan Downes (GreatHorse) doubled up with a win at the Junior Amateur, July 31-Aug. 4 on his home course. Carson Muse (Winchester) shot 2-under 142 to qualify for match play only to exit in the first round. Cole Cassidy, Aidan Monahan, Julian Ragusa and Brandon Buck (Winchester), Brandon Vitarsi (Meadow Brook), Ian Rourke, Jack Moriarty and AJ Bodnar (Ferncroft) and Matt Weed (Tedesco) missed the 36-hole cut. In the Pre-Junior division, Bodnar (152) was runner-up, while Moriarty (166) placed 12th.
The 90th Massachusetts Girls Junior Amateur was held July 31 – Aug. 2 at Braintree Municipal GC. Madison Smith (Student member/MIAA) posted a 36-hole total of 137 to carry a two-shot lead over Isabel Brozena (Indian Ridge) and a six-shot lead over Kaitlyn Doe (Student Member/MIAA) into the final round. Doe made up six shots on the last seven holes to finish at 213 and force a playoff with Smith. But Smith turned tables on the first playoff hole, draining her birdie putt after a Doe miss. Brozena finished one shot back at 214. Abby Zhu (Indian Ridge) shot 219 and finished fifth. Victoria Adams (Winchester) missed the cut. In the Silver Division, Callie Dias (Renaissance) shot 162 and won on the first playoff hole.
A qualifying round for the Mass Mid-Amateur Championship was held at Gannon GC in Lynn on Aug. 10. Hunter Stone (Tedesco) tied for medalist with an even-par 70. Sean Winchell (Gannon) was one shot back. Phil Miceli (Sagamore), Paul Haney (Olde Salem Greens), Michael Malley (Ferncroft) and Justin Sharaf (Bellevue) shot 73 and qualified. The championship will be held Sept. 18-20 at Willowbend.
At the 42nd Amateur Public Links Championship Aug. 7-8 at Olde Scotland Links, Bill Drohen (Bradford) shot 2-under par 142 and tied for third. Sean Winchell (Gannon) shot 153 and tied for 38th. Travis Ryan (The Meadow) shot 157 and tied for 48th.
The 56th Ouimet Memorial Tournament was held July 26-28 at Oakley CC and Woodland CC. It turned into a family affair for the Emmerich and Smith families. Christian Emmerich (Kernwood) finished runner-up in the Championship Division, five shots behind winner Ryan Downes at 5-under 206. Brother Aidan Emmerich (Kernwood) shot 210 and finished T-5. In the Women’s Division, Molly Smith (Vesper) shot 2-over 215, one shot behind winner Shannon Johnson. Sister Morgan Smith (Vesper) shot 217 and finished third, while Madison Smith (Student member/MIAA) shot 230 and finished sixth. Christine Mandile (Winchester) shot 240 and finished T-8. Wendy Colby (Ould Newbury) missed the cut. Other top performers in the Championship Division were Owen Egan (Winchester, 215, T-13), Evan Giggey (Andover, 221, T-28) and Carson Muse (Winchester, 224, 32nd). Cael Kohan (Ould Newbury), John Gilmartin (Indian Ridge) and Brian Theriault (Andover), and Aidan Monahan (Winchester) missed the cut. In the Lowery Senior Division, George Popp (Vesper) shot 230 and finished 13th.

At Ould Newbury Aug. 10, Joseph Sanchez (Salem) won the B11 & under group with a 37 with Jackson O’Hare (Danvers) tying for runner-up with a 48. Bentley Seng (Peabody) shot 63 and finished fifth. In the B14-15 division, Joseph Tavilla (Peabody) finished second with a 75. Other top-10 performers included Anthony Barror (Beverly), Jack Burnham (Melrose), Bobby MacAuley (Marblehead) and Henry Robinson (Beverly). Brady Salah (Gloucester) won the 16-18 division with a 76. In the B14-15 division, Micah Hashikawa (Swampscott) placed first with a 74, one shot ahead of Jak Sweeney (Stoneham). Other top-5 performers included Cole Velardo (Middleton), Jack Burnham (Melrose) and Bobby MacAuley (Marblehead). In the 12-13 division, Leo Su (Ipswich) shot 93 and placed fourth, while Jackson O’Hare (Danvers) shot 43 and was runner-up in the 11 & under division. At Rockport July 26, JJ Young (Reading) took the B16-18 division with a 78. Isaiah Francis (Gloucester) and Shane Rose (Peabody) tied for second with 79. Andrew Johnson (Gloucester) and Brady Salah (Gloucester) shot 80 and tied for fourth. Joseph Orlando (Gloucester) finished seventh with an 85 and Luke DiLisio (Lynn) finished eight with an 88. In the B14-15 division, Patrick Maloney (Wakefield) shot 75 and was third. Samuel Lesterson (Gloucester) and Jacob Carlson (Chelmsford) shot 79 and tied for fourth. Bobby MacAuley (Marblehead) and Anthony Barror (Beverly) shot 81 and tied for eighth. Corson Quinn (Reading) finished tied for 10th with an 85. Lukas Albano (Gloucester) finished 12th with an 86. Jay Wang (Reading) and Michael Forgione (Lynnfield) tied for 13th with 87. LB Manning (Haverhill) won the B12-13 division with a 79. Rocco Fawcett (Wenham) finished second with an 87. Joseph Colliton (Wakefield) finished third with a 78, while JJ Young (Reading) finished fourth with an 80. At Reedy Meadow July 3, Charlotte Rollins (Boxford) shot 40 to win the G13 & under division. Top finishers in the B16-18 division were Will Sorensen (Georgetown), 72; Drew Barrett (Wakefield), 73; Brady Salah (Gloucester), 74; Daegan Pothier (Wakefield), 76; and Cooper Miller (South Hamilton), 86. Micah Hashikawa (Swampscott) won the B14-15 division with a 67, two shots ahead of Anthony Barror (Beverly) and Bobby McAuley (Marblehead). Other top finishers were Stephen Forgione (Lynnfield) and Tennyson Kagan (South Hamilton), 71; Michael Forgione (Lynnfield), 75; Joseph Tavilla (Peabody), 75 and Peter Carelli (Woburn), 82. In the B12-13 division, James Maloney (Wakefield) shot 70 and tied for first, with Jack Martin (Danvers) one shot back in third. At the U.S. Girls Junior Championship July 17-22 at the Eisenhower GC at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Molly Smith (Vesper) made it into the match play bracket with a 36-hole score of 6-over 150, earning the No. 52 seed against No. 3 seeded Alice Ziyi Zhao (China), but lost, 2&1. Isabel Brozena (Indian Ridge) shot 154 and missed the cut.
Morgan Smith survived a 3-way playoff that included her sister, Molly, to clinch the final spot in a 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier at Renaissance CC on June 27. Morgan and Molly both posted a 1-under 71. Morgan shot 146 at the championship proper at Bel-Air CC in Los Angeles, missing the cut by two shots.
Emily Dawson got a hole-in-one on the 125-yard 9th hole at Kernwood CC on July 28. She hit a 4-wood.
